Answers for new students of Goshin Jutsu

Starting a new hobby, sport, club or martial art can be quite difficult and disconcerting. You may have many questions that you would liked answered before you join or soon after you have started. Many of these questions can be answered by your sensei or by the other students of your class. If you feel unable to ask or hadn't even thought of the questions yet, this section is for you.

This section has been written by new students for new students. We remember the concerns we had initially and have written these down to share. This has been written as a FAQ (frequently asked questions) and will expand and grow in the future.

How much does is cost to train?

The basic price is £4 per lesson although we offer discounts for multiple classes per week and families. Your first lesson is free to give you an idea if our style fits you.

How much does is cost to join Goshin Jutsu?

There is no joining fee. After about a month we ask you to purchase insurance, a license and a gi (martial art uniform). You get all this for the very reasonable price of £60.  Young dragons have a reduced price of £48 and family discounts are available. To make it even more reasonable, we give you 12 lessons (i.e. 12 lesson @ £4 which equals £48) together in the fee. This we believe makes it a very attractive and affordable package.

Do I have to buy anything else?

You can buy a t-shirt to train in (although it is not compulsory). As you advance in the style you may wish to purchase hand mitts and shin protectors. For those who do not like to train in bare feet you can also purchase shoes. See all these on our Merchandise page.

How often do we grade?

This is a question that really contains two questions: How often do gradings take place and how often can you progress. Gradings take place every month (approximately) at a variety of class venues (see Grading Schedule). You can attempt to go for your next grade depending on if your sensei feels that you are ready. How quickly you progress then depends on how quickly you learn and progress and how often you train.

What is the grade structure?

This is a question that really depends on age. We have three syllabuses. The ages 5-9 are covered by the Young Dragons syllabus. The 9 to 16 are covered by the Junior syllabus. Adults undertake the Senior syllabus.

The progression of grades goes as follows (for seniors)
